Essential Upgrades for the Work Sharp Professional Precision Adjust

The Work Sharp Professional Precision Adjust (WSPPA) is already a very capable guided sharpening system. With its sturdy metal construction and digital angle indicator, it’s a major step up from the original plastic Work Sharp Precision Adjust (WSPA).

But even great tools can be refined. After months of daily sharpening, I found ways to make the PPA even more stable, precise, and versatile. So I designed a few accessories that solve common frustrations and make the sharpening process smoother, faster, and more consistent.

This post covers those upgrades, including stone holders and a stabilization platform, to help you get the most out of your Professional Precision Adjust.

Stone Holders

The stone holder included with the Work Sharp Professional Precision Adjust is limited to proprietary Work Sharp abrasives, with the coarsest option being 220 grit. That works for touch-ups, but it’s painfully slow for major sharpening jobs like bevel resets or reprofiling.

My 6" Stone Holder removes that limitation entirely. It’s designed to accept third-party aftermarket 6"x1" (6x1) stones, including diamond, CBN, ceramic, and lapping films. This opens up a complete range of grit options ranging from ultra-coarse 80 grit all the way up through medium (400) and fine stones (1000) to ultra-fine polishing films (5000+).

For example, when I need to reprofile a blade, I start with an 80-grit diamond stone to remove metal quickly and reset the bevel. Then I move through 120, 220, 400, and 1000 grit, finishing with lapping films for a polished, mirror edge.

This single upgrade turns the PPA into a truly open platform, compatible with nearly every 6"x1" stone on the market and capable of handling everything from heavy reshaping to precision polishing.

Many users prefer shorter stones, so I also created a Universal 4" to 6" Stone Holder that fits both sizes. This version is ideal if you already own 4" abrasives and want more flexibility.

Rod Holder (Included with Stone Holder)

One small but frustrating challenge with the Professional Precision Adjust is what happens when you rotate the knife. To give the blade clearance, you naturally tilt the base backward, but that causes the sharpening rod to swing down and get in the way. It’s a minor annoyance that quickly becomes irritating during longer sharpening sessions.

To solve this, every one of my Stone Holders includes a Rod Holder that attaches to the top of the PPA base. When you’re ready to rotate the knife, simply snap the rod in the holder. It keeps the rod safely out of the way, preventing accidental bumps or interference with the clamp.

The rod holder also double as a long term storage option to keep the rod out of the way when not in use.

Platform with Knife Supports

The Professional Precision Adjust is solid right out of the box, but even with its all metal construction, longer knives can still flex near the edge under pressure. That slight flex can make it hard to fully apex or maintain a consistent bevel angle.

My platform attaches to the front of the PPA base and features three adjustable supports that slide underneath the blade just a few millimeters behind the edge. Raise them until they barely touch the knife, and the flex disappears. With the blade stabilized, burr formation becomes quicker and edges stay perfectly consistent from heel to tip.

Final Thoughts

The Work Sharp Professional Precision Adjust is an incredible sharpening platform on its own; durable, accurate, and versatile. But with the right upgrades, you can push it even further.

Whether you want more flexibility with aftermarket abrasives, added stability for long blades, or a cleaner, more organized setup, these accessories elevate the system from excellent to exceptional.
